Preface

While the first public version of AICS can and will be improved upon, this tool was designed to meet us in the moment we're in. A general lack of consensus about AI use and its outputs has contributed to a lack of guidance that AICS aims to provide every everyday users and professionals alike.

The quickly evolving AI landscape calls for greater transparency in the attribution of Artificial Intelligence tools in human-led generative sessions now.

The AICS will be continuously updated as technology evolves. All refinements will aim to build on the existing framework.

1. Overview

The Artificial Intelligence Citation Standard (AICS) is a universal framework for ethically and transparently citing human-AI collaboration.

It was developed to:

• Credit both the human and AI in creative, research, and decision-making processes
• Promote responsible and human-led AI use
• Establish clear metadata around how AI was used in any given session

AICS is built for educators, researchers, professionals, students, and everyday users who want to be transparent about AI’s role in their work. It helps to document the human-led process of interacting with Generative AI tools.

2. How to Use AICS

The easiest way to transparently catalog your Generative AI Session is to copy and paste the prompt below into your LLM of choice to generate an AICS citation.

We have designed the AICS to be as user-friendly as possible.
